Message from the President
We have two pillar missions. One is research for radioactive waste management. And another is fund administration for geological disposal of radioactive waste and reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel.
In the research mission, as the sole neutral research organization specialized for radioactive waste in Japan, since 1976, we have been conducting wide-angle research, hardware to software for all types of radioactive waste, low level to high level with academic and industrial competency. Our activities contribute to supporting the national policies, achieving the basic and fundamental research, advancing the safety regulations, broadening the alternatives of the power utilities and the disposal implementing entities and developing the civilian standards and criteria for radioactive waste management.
In the fund administration mission, as the fund administration organization under "the Specified Radioactive Waste Final Disposal Act" in 2000, we commenced the administration of the final disposal fund for high level waste reserved by Nuclear Waste Management Organization of Japan (NUMO). The fund for TRU waste geological disposal was added to this by amendment of the act in 2008. In addition, since 2005, we have been conducting the administration of the reprocessing fund reserved by the power utilities as the fund administration organization under "the Act for Spent Fuel Reprocessing Fund”.
In February, 2010, we were authorized as a public interest incorporated foundation under the new acts on authorization of Public Interest Corporation. We are glad to take this opportunity to reinforce our activities toward more public interests.
Facing drastic turning of circumstances around nuclear power after the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station in the Great East Japan Earthquake in March, 2011, we are ready to reaffirm importance of our missions, and to serve the public more actively.
